Artist: Julie Cusack

Course Date:  21st – 24th May 2024
Medium: Graphite, charcoal, acrylic paint
Participants: Maximum 9
Course level: Beginners to Advanced
Course Cost: €420

Julie studied Visual Education at Waterford Institute of Technology and subsequently earned a diploma in Painting from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. She has been practicing and teaching drawing and painting for 15 years in a wide variety of contexts.

She has recently relocated to Waterford City. She has exhibited extensively within Ireland and abroad including the RHA, Eigse Carlow and The Irish Cultural Centre in London. Her work is represented in the OPW State collection as well as well as many private collections including Druids Glen Gold Resort and The Marylebone Hotel, London.

Julie’s abstracted landscapes are vibrant, layered and have always been rooted in drawing. Working on paper, wood and canvas she combines paint with  drawn elements as drawing for her is not only a way to represent object or place, but is also a way to engage in the intuitive physicality of making marks on a surface.

About the Course

This course is an immersive 4 day course with a strong emphasis on play and process rather than the production of finished work. It is suitable for anyone interested in abstraction , semi abstraction, gestural abstraction or abstract expressionism.

Drawing and painting exercises will range from observational to experimental. The course will be of particular benefit to artists returning to a practice after a break; artists looking to develop, explore or expand their visual  language around abstraction or those who simply wish to explore painting and drawing for the first time. The only requirement is an interest in abstraction.

We will look briefly at artists both contemporary and past who make or made strong contributions to Abstract painting.

The four days will move between drawing, collage and painting while working on a variety of surfaces including paper , wood, canvas and/or recycled materials where possible.  The emphasis will be on responding to materials in an intuitive and playful way and building confidence in approaching drawing and painting. We will look primarily to  coastal scapes of Dunmore East but may also include studio based set ups or personal reference ideas.

Materials will include pencil, charcoal, ink , acrylic and collage.

*The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and its beautiful seaside surroundings, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. On request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials will be provided after signing up to the course.
