Bernadette Kiely is a visual artist, working in painting, drawing, photography and collage, known for her portrayals of the fragility of the natural world and humanity’s interaction within it. Her practice is grounded in slow observation, tracing cycles of change from local flooding to environmental crises across the world. She grew up in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary and graduated from the College of Art and Design, Waterford (SETU) and the Slade School of Fine Art, London, UK. Recent exhibitions include: ‘Ashes + Rain’, Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, Co. Represented by Taylor Galleries, Dublin, Bernadette is a member of Aosdana [the governmental body of artists deemed by their peers to be making a significant contribution to the arts in Ireland]. She was a founding member of the Thomastown Environmental Association in 1990. Her work is held in public and private collections in Ireland, UK, USA, as well as throughout Europe.
Amelia Caulfield is a socially engaged artist, videographer, and arts facilitator based in Dublin. She has a BA Hons. in Film and Documentary (GMIT), an MA in Social Practice and the Creative Environment (LSAD), and is currently pursuing an MFA specialising in media at NCAD, Dublin. Amelia’s work spans public art, interactive installation, workshop facilitation, community organising, filmmaking, photography, and print. Her areas of interest include themes of community, interpersonal relationships, values and active citizenship.
About the Course
This two day workshop hosted by Bernadette Kiely and Amelia Caulfield will invite participants to consider the effects of the changing climate on the coastal landscape. This workshop will respond to Bernadette’s painting practice which focuses on the natural environment, the fragility of nature, and the effects of the climate crisis on landscape, human, and non human life.
Participants will be guided through drawing, painting, and writing exercises as well as a selection of technical demonstrations using paper, charcoal, pencils, acrylic, watercolour paints, chalk pastel and felt pens.
* The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials will be provided after signing up to the course.
