Course Concept

Welcome to Artform’s first Urban Sketching course with Róisín Curé! With Róisín, we will be sketching anywhere, any time, always from life, from the magnificent to the mundane, carefully observing to see how to capture the spirit of the moment. In each session, we will address a number of principles. While sketching boats in the harbour, we might look at Reflections (using watercolour-first technique, followed by pen); we will work on Perspective while sketching Dunmore’s thatched cottages (using watercolour-first technique, followed by pen); we will learn how to sketch People over a coffee and croissant in the Bay Café, using a combination of techniques (e.g. ghost people after drawing, and fude 55º pens). Sketching in the park or on the harbour wall, we will bring the sketches of people alive by bringing Storytelling into them with speech bubbles and collage. And on the beach, we will sketch People at Leisure and Big Skies (using wet on wet, and fude fountain pen).
During the course, we will learn about Composition, and how to choose subjects enjoyable to sketch and pleasing to look at. We will practice drawing Accuracy: how to gain in confidence and accuracy, using watercolour-first technique. We will pay attention to Timing, and learn to leave watercolour for the right amount of time, so that it behaves as planed. Róisín will help the course participants to achieve impressive results and get over all kinds of hurdles when it comes to reasons why the sketch might not look as desired. And above all, we will find out how to get the most pleasure and fun from sketching.

* The course takes place in the beautiful Artform modern light-filled studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and in the beautiful coastal village of Dunmore East, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days.
