Course Concept

Painting directly from nature, unmediated by imagery, offers the opportunity to feel and to respond to the gestures of land and sky. On this two day course, artists will focus on observing gesture, or movement in space, and learn how to engage with this through painting.

We will first look at examples of gesture in artworks both in painting and in other contemporary art forms.  We will draw from the examples, observing topography and sky movements. We will look together in the studio, at the possibilities of a limited palette and at the expressive qualities of brushwork.

While covering the practicalities of palette, mediums and preparation of the surface, this course is less concerned with conventions of landscape oil painting but is focused primarily on painting as a means to see more and differently. We will walk and observe and each participant will choose a subject in the landscape that resonates with them. To facilitate mobility, we will work with a minimum of equipment.

* The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials and safety will be provided after signing up to the course.
