Artist: James Horan
Course Date: 23th – 24th March 2024
Participants: Maximum 8
Course level: All levels, beginners welcome
Course Cost: €280 (materials included)
James studied at the Crawford Collage of Art and Design in Cork, Ireland. It was in art school he found stone sculpture, his main medium. This labour- intensive process informs the final form, helping to create his unique style which is recognisable by its exaggerated proportions and expressive poses. James draws inspiration from daily life, trying to express his experience of the human condition by balancing weight, mass, and volume forming rhythmic compositions to draw the eye around the sculpture. He considers his sculpture “a physical representation of an emotional state”. James work is exhibited extensively and represented in private collections internationally and is represented by Sol Art Dublin.
James is currently developing an ongoing series of surfers, swimmers, and divers. As with figures in flight, the weightlessness frees a sculpture from its base or plinth, allowing for interesting and delicate compositions.

James will give an introduction to relief sculpture and demonstrate the techniques used to carve a relief in stone. Artists will then be invited to practice and get used to the tools. Each artist will use hand tools to produce a relief sculpture in stone (slate or similar). Artists are welcome to bring their own designs (keep it simple) to turn into a relief piece of art or a simple design can be provided. James will help transfer the design on to the stone and guide artists through the process. Although the course does not require a lot of physical strength, being able to use a hammer is a must.
* The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials and safety will be provided after signing up to the course.
