Brian Smyth is an award-winning graduate of the Crawford College of Art and Design (1995), and an alumnus of The Angel Academy, a school, dedicated to the training of realist drawing and painting techniques based in Florence where he trained extensively in the art of figurative and portrait painting, and where he consequently became an instructor in life drawing and painting. He is represented by galleries both in Ireland and in the UK, and his work is held in both public and private collections.
The three-day workshop on master copying in oils is designed to immerse participants in the artistic techniques and approach of the renowned Irish painter, William Open. Focusing specifically on portraiture, the workshop aims to guide aspiring artists through the process of creating a lifelike portrait painting in the style of Open.
The workshop will commence with an in-depth study of Open’s portraits, examining their composition, palette, and overall technique. Participants will closely analyze a selected painting and proceed to sketch and compose their own version under the guidance of a skilled instructor. The initial stages will focus on drawing accurate proportions, capturing the likeness of the subject, and transferring the composition onto canvas.
Subsequently, participants will learn essential oil painting techniques, such as color mixing, glazing, and layering, which are crucial in achieving the depth and luminosity characteristic of Open’s portraits. With step-by-step guidance, participants will begin to paint their portraits, gradually incorporating Open’s style and techniques. The instructor will provide individual feedback and support throughout the process, assisting with challenges and offering valuable insights.
By the end of this three-day intensive workshop, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of William Open’s portrait painting style and developed their own technical skills in oil painting. Through the practice of master copying, participants will have honed their ability to analyze and recreate the beauty and complexity found within Open’s acclaimed artworks.
This workshop is of most benefit to painters of who already have some general understanding and at least little experience of painting.
