My training and work process is based on working from life. I studied in NY and in Canada and have gained portrait commissions all over the world. Painting and drawing from life reveals all the secrets in art and after gaining enough experience in my training, I feel it has allowed me the opportunity to create with a degree of conviction.
This requires discipline and hard work but I enjoy very much to pass on what I have learned to eager students. My fortee has dropped me in the portrait world but I work considerably in other genres and fields of art, particularly plen air work.
Inspiration comes from people and the past and I use this to infuse my work in making it my own. My hope is that the work speaks for itself.
This course takes its lead from the Old Masters. Students will work directly from the posed Life Model and taken through a step by step approach to drawing classically using dry media.
Life drawing is fundamental and crucial if one is interested in painting in a realist fashion. The first day will be spent drawing the full posed figure and gaining insight into capturing the gesture and describing the distribution of weight in each pose. This will lead us into describing the three-dimensional quality in the drawing and laying in the major gray values that enhance the form.
The final day will be spent in painting in oils using a limited flesh palette. Modeling forms, rendering values, edges, composition, anatomy, distribution of weight and creating depth will all be demonstrated and practiced whilst in front of the Life Model. This exciting class in drawing and painting the figure will be a great crash course for both the beginner and more advanced student and for enhancing students individual skills.
