James studied at the Crawford Collage of Art and Design in Cork, Ireland. It was in art school he found stone sculpture, his main medium. This labour- intensive process informs the final form, helping to create his unique style which is recognisable by its exaggerated proportions and expressive poses. James draws inspiration from daily life, trying to express his experience of the human condition by balancing weight, mass, and volume forming rhythmic compositions to draw the eye around the sculpture. He considers his sculpture “a physical representation of an emotional state”. James work is exhibited extensively and represented in private collections internationally and is represented by Sol Art Dublin.
James is currently developing an ongoing series of surfers, swimmers, and divers. As with figures in flight, the weightlessness frees a sculpture from its base or plinth, allowing for interesting and delicate compositions.

Working from live model, participants will learn to create a likeness of the human head. Learning the about the positions, proportions and relationships between each part of the head/face. Building on a wooden armature on the first day participants will create the rough size/shape of the head, on the second day each element will be refined and, working from observation, a likeness will be attempted.
Clay life/head modelling is a central part of sculptural practice, as life drawing is for a figurative painter. It is the best way for any artist to gain an understanding the shapes and subtleties of the human.
