Course Concept
The course will focus on developing skills in oil painting and charcoal drawing.
In the studio setting I will give demonstrations. We will look at the properties and potential of the oil paint. We will learn about mixing colour through use of a limited palette. We will study how various tools, implements and brushes can create innovative and lively methods of paint application. There will be an emphasis on controlled experimentation with the materials in order to gain confidence with the medium.
Daily, we will venture out to paint in the landscape.
I have found, through experience, that my best instruction techniques are a combination of practical demonstration, discussion and question and answer. Individual practice on location will be the main method of development. I will give one to one advice as the course progresses.
Charcoal drawing is a good technique to learn. Through drawing we will learn about the composition of the subject.
Developing confidence and familiarity we can investigate the space, exploring texture, tone and depth. This invaluable preliminary gathering of information is useful and can be brought into play when developing an oil painting.
The course can be taken independently or combined with the two day watercolour sketching course led by Neal immediately before this course: in which case the invaluable preliminary information gathered in watercolours will be brought into play during the charcoal and oil course when developing an oil painting.
* The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials and safety will be provided after signing up to the course.
