PJ Lynch has won many awards for his work as a book illustrator including the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal on two occasions, and his books have sold in their millions. His most recent books are ‘The Haunted Lake’, and The Night Before Christmas’. In recent years, PJ Lynch has been commissioned to create posters for Opera Ireland and the Abbey Theatre, as well as designing stamps for An Post, and coins for the Royal Mint.

He has also designed Europe’s largest mosaic for the Basilica at the Marian Shrine in Knock. In 2016 PJ was inaugurated as Laureate na nÓg by President Higgins.

“Throughout my career as an illustrator, I have continued to paint and draw regularly from life as a way of keeping my skills honed. In recent years however, I paint and draw more for the challenge, and for the sheer love of it. I want to share my passion for representational art with the artists who join my course. At the start of this course, we will discuss some elements of the theory of portraiture, and we will look at some great examples of the genre. Next, we will progress to learn the basic elements from my own oil painting practice. Over the years, I have stripped down and simplified my technique making it accessible for both inexperienced and more accomplished artists. On day 1 we will explore portraiture without the pressure of working from a live model. Instead, we will work from some great examples of portraiture (a selection of prints to copy will be supplied by me). On day 2 and 3 we will put what we have learned into practice by painting a portrait sketch directly from live models. I will offer a demo and give each participant one-to-one tuition throughout the day as their painting progresses. We will work hard, we will learn techniques and theories, and, I promise, we will have a lot of fun too.”

* The course takes place in Artform’s modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the second and third day. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials will be provided after signing up to the course.
