Maurice studied at LSAD, RCA, London, ENSBA(PSL), Paris, Mac Master, Toronto, UL, Limerick.
He has taught at the LSAD, Mac Master, IADT, NCAD and UL.
He has curated and project managed many exhibitions and site specific works both in Ireland and abroad. Recently curating a group exhibition which toured China, entitled ‘Youyi Visual’ a government to government initiative celebrating forty years of Irish diplomatic relations with China. The Youyi project encompassed exhibitions, talks and practical demonstrations which has developed into cooperation between Chinese art schools and Chinese artists exhibiting in Ireland. A similar ongoing project is with students from the Kyiv Academy of Art and Architecture and mentoring some students from the Padre Pio Rehabilitation Centre, Cape Coast, Ghana. Curator of the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery, Limerick Museum. Tutor with Big Look Art. Contemporary art adviser in the private sector.
Course concept
Every artist from time to time comes up against a wall when very little seems to make sense within his or her practice. This course aims to find ways around the wall. Usually, a slow down is the work letting the artist know that a particular process and or subject theme has come to its natural conclusion. If the work isn’t interesting for the artist, it certainly won’t be for the viewer. Art is a multi-dimensional conversation; everyone has something to say: so how is ’My’ work relevant to this conversation? Through structured projects this course takes the participants into the world of international art; what are the current trends in sampling, industrial processes, art theory and how the broken gallery system is reinventing itself. Currently, art focused on developing structure through ‘sampling’ – picking elements from the history of art and general culture and reinventing and moulding pictorial form for its own sake. Current international painting tends to be a palimpsest of print, painterly techniques, appropriated images and industrial processes, seemingly at variance with each other, which through this edgy discordance form a contented multi part marriage. We examine the most important developments and the leading exponents of this twenty first century ‘mannerism’ and role of the galleries and museums in the commodification of the visual arts.
By beginning a fresh body of work unrelated to your present methodology, we negotiate a logical route through current developments and strategies in contemporary practice, in turn using a combination of these to inform and challenge our developed conceptions and current work, the outcome being new strategies and possibilities to refill and refresh each participants visual vocabulary providing templates as to how each artist can refresh and reinvent their work and output.
* The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. On request, Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials will be provided after signing up to the course.
