Julie studied Visual Education at Waterford Institute of Technology and subsequently earned a diploma in Painting from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. She has been practicing and teaching drawing and painting for 15 years in a wide variety of contexts.

She has recently relocated to Waterford City. She has exhibited extensively within Ireland and abroad including the RHA, Eigse Carlow and The Irish Cultural Centre in London. Her work is represented in the OPW State collection as well as well as many private collections including Druids Glen Gold Resort and The Marylebone Hotel, London.

Julie’s abstracted landscapes are vibrant, layered and have always been rooted in drawing. Working on paper, wood and canvas she combines paint with  drawn elements as drawing for her is not only a way to represent object or place, but is also a way to engage in the intuitive physicality of making marks on a surface.

Course concept

This course will provide an immersive four days of play and exploration. Using  a variety of subjects including the local coastal landscape, we will spend two days drawing and sketching followed by two days of painting. It is suitable for those with an interest in semi-abstract or abstract expressionist work.
Drawing and painting exercises will range from observational to experimental. The emphasis will be on responding to materials in an intuitive and playful way and building confidence in approaching drawing and painting.
The course will be of particular benefit to artists returning to a practice after a break; artists looking to develop or introduce new ways to generate work or visual research; those who simply wish to explore painting and drawing for the first time.
We will work on various surfaces including paper and wood , using a large variety of drawing and water-based material.

*The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and its beautiful seaside surroundings, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials and safety will be provided after signing up to the course.
