Julie studied Visual Education at Waterford Institute of Technology and subsequently earned a diploma in Painting from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. She has been practicing and teaching drawing and painting for 15 years in a wide variety of contexts.

She has recently relocated to Waterford City. She has exhibited extensively within Ireland and abroad including the RHA, Eigse Carlow and The Irish Cultural Centre in London. Her work is represented in the OPW State collection as well as well as many private collections including Druids Glen Gold Resort and The Marylebone Hotel, London.

Julie’s abstracted landscapes are vibrant, layered and have always been rooted in drawing. Working on paper, wood and canvas she combines paint with  drawn elements as drawing for her is not only a way to represent object or place, but is also a way to engage in the intuitive physicality of making marks on a surface.

Course concept

This workshop is inclusive and suitable for anyone who has ever been curious about or interested in abstract painitng. It is also suitable for those who would like to improve or explore their current painting practice through abstraction.

The workshop explores abstract landscape through drawing, painting and collage. It will encourage an intuitive response to materials.  The emphasis will be on energy, expression colour and mark. We will look at how to make your palette, composition and application work to support your own visual voice. Exercises will be of particular interest to anyone who wants to develop a loose, fresh more gestural style. This workshop will help participants to generate ways of developing consistent formats for abstract landscape. We will work on several pieces at once where possible. We would look to the surrounding landscape of Dunmore East to source initial drawings and sketches (using both drawing materials and paint) from which larger paintings will evolve. Materials used will be water based – e.g. acrylic, ink, water based oils and collage materials. Pace of the group will be taken into account and each visiting artist will be suported to produce a number of finished or near finished paintings.

*The course takes place in Artform modern ligh-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials and safety will be provided after signing up to the course. Artform operates comprehensive Health and Safety studio policy as well as full credit/refund policy for artists affected by Covid-19 restrictions.
