John Short was born in Scotland. He has lived and worked in Ireland for many years. He is a graduate from Edinburgh College of Art and The Royal College of Art, London. He has been the recipient of many awards including a Royal College of Art drawing prize, the RCA/Berger colour prize, The Artist’s prize in The Royal Watercolour Society, London and The President’s award in The Irish Watercolour Society. He has represented Ireland in the last three years in the Confederation of European Watercolour Societies exhibitions in Estonia, Germany, The Czech Republic and this year in Bilbao.  He is represented by Solomon Fine Art, Dublin where he has regular solo exhibitions of his paintings, prints and 3D work. John’s work is in many public and private collections in Ireland and internationally.
Course Concept
The aim of this course is for you to consider the practice of watercolour painting through a series of applications and practical demonstrations of unorthodox and non-traditional use of water-based materials.
We will be working pretty much exclusively in the studio, and I will be bringing along a wide variety of my materials and tools from my studio to show you and demonstrate how they might offer up possibilities in your picture making.
You will be encouraged to experiment in your own paintings in new and unpredictable ways of approaching this medium, with a fresh eye, hopefully in ways that you have never experienced before. We will be using the village of Dunmore East as the subject matter, of course, for all of this project work so make sure to include your smart phone in your material list.
I have given a few similar workshops with Artform, and they are always busy, challenging and fun.
* The course takes place in Artform modern light-filled seaside studio with 24hr access for each visiting artist, and runs from 11am to 5pm on the first day and from 10am to 4pm on the subsequent days. Cost does not include accommodation, on request Artform offers artist accommodation options. Details on art materials and safety will be provided after signing up to the course. Artform operates comprehensive Health and Safety studio policy as well as full credit/refund policy for artists affected by Covid-19 restrictions.
