Artform Paint-out & Pop-up ‘Exhibition on Easels’, May 4th, 10am – 5pm, Mount Congreve Gardens, Kilmeaden co. Waterford, part of the first ‘ART IN THE GARDENS’.

We are thrilled to announce a day long paint-out and draw-along with a pop-up exhibition in the spectacular grounds of Mount Congreve Gardens Co. Waterford as part of a three-day ‘Art in the Gardens’ event unfolding this May Bank Holiday weekend.

If you would like to have the opportunity to create in the grounds of Mount Congreve Gardens, meet other artists, paint alongside experienced guest artists and show the work you create to the visitors of Mount Congreve in a pop-up ‘Exhibition on Easels’, grab your easel and paints and come along!

The Paint-out will take place on Saturday 4 May from 10am to 2pm, followed at 2pm by an artist picnic (for artists who booked) or own lunch/lunch at the Café.

The following guest artists, painting or drawing in the gardens on the day, will be on hand to provide constructive feedback:

  • Tony Robinson (plein air painting in oils)
  • Steve Browning (plein air painting in acrylics)
  • Róisín Curé (sketching in watercolour and pen)
  • Sebastian Thommen (plein air painting in watercolour)
  • Nicola Morrin (botanical sketching in watercolours/watercolour pencils and crayons)
  • Alan Clarke (figure sketching from life model in the gardens)

Please note, these guest artists will not be formally teaching on the day, but will be available for any questions you may have and will be happy to provide constructive feedback on your work.

Pop-up ‘Exhibition on Easels’ with prizes

On the same day, after lunch, you will also have the opportunity to show and sell the work you produce on the day in a pop-up ‘Exhibition on Easels’ and be in for a chance to win a prize. The ‘Exhibition on Easels’ will take place in the grounds of Mount Congreve on Saturday May 4 from 3pm to 5pm, and Sunday May 5 throughout the day, allowing participating artists to display and sell their work on their easels to visitors in the gardens. Only work produced on site on the day can be shown in the pop-up ‘Exhibition on Easels’. A 15% commission on each sale applies, which will be contributed towards the ongoing maintenance of the gardens – please make your donation here: Each artist is responsible for their own sales. We suggest that apart from accepting cash, Revolut is a handy payment method. The guest artists will form an impromptu jury and select work for prizes in different categories.

Participating artists may bring their own lunch on the day or choose their lunch at the Stables Café. Please note, there are no bins on the grounds, so each artist will be responsible for taking away their own litter.

There is a special ticket option to book an artist picnic. This will be catered by the Pantry at CLIFF on May 4. Artists will be invited to join the artist picnic (bring your own blanket or folding chair) at a designated location in the gardens from 2pm – 2.45pm.

What to bring

We suggest you come equipped for a day of drawing/paintings outdoors including comfortable layered painting clothes for all weathers, hat and sun cream, foldable chair, wet wipes, bin bag.

For your art equipment and materials, please take into account that the six guest-artists will be working throughout the day in different media, and you are welcome to join in with any number of them.

We suggest you bring equipment and a selection of media you usually work in, so that you can choose from or alternate between painting in watercolours with Sebastian Thommen or Nicola Morrin (pack also watercolour pencils and crayons), paint in oils or acrylics with Tony Robinson or Steve Browning, try some urban sketching with Róisín Curé in watercolours and inks, and/or enjoy drawing in any dry medium from costumed life model with Alan Clarke.

Your garden painting/drawing/sketching kit might for example include: portable easel & stool, sketchbook, surfaces to paint on, brushes, paints and media, and suitable containers with lids (water depending on your medium), painting palette, rags; drawing pad with support to use on your easel or to hold, dry media to draw including watercolour pencil or crayons; clips, fixative; fountain pen, sketching inks, gelly roll.

Consider a suitable simple carrying solution for your equipment and materials. Consider a solution to protect your work from rain, and wind, and a solution for bringing your finished work home with you. Don’t forget you cleaning wet wipes and bin bag.

Art in the Gardens Volunteers

From the gardens gate, to parking in the grounds, to registration and your picnic, our young art student volunteers will help you to find your way and enjoy the day. Please work with them closely and direct any queries you might have to them.
